Hey everyone, some of you may have seen my Math Equations topic in the math forum. Well I would like to start a similar topic for the Astronomy section. It works like this: I'll post a question then someone will answer it whoever gets it right will post the next question. If the person who got the question right doesn't post a new question within three days somone else will post one. And if there is no confirmation on an answer within two days the first person to post an answer will post the next question. O.K the first question is pretty easy. What constellation is Polaris in?"Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That's relativity." I checked my software after i made the post. Well Edmund go ahead and post a question."Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That's relativity." Albert Einstein

You mean at different times of the year I am assuming because I don't see how a planet can show superior and inferior conjunction at the same time."Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. In X-ray photos of the Sun, there sometimes appears a dark band of sun-spots. What is the orientation of this band to the ecliptic plane?Beagle, Irish, Sailor beware! Look down, look down, along that line before you travel there... -Dr. Burroughs

I almost said one or two outer planets and then i remembered that their rotation is slower than ours so then I thought Mercury would be it but what threw me off was that edmund said planets. I didn't think venus ever had superior conjunction. "Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. Inferior conjunction is when the planet is between the Earth and the sun. Superior conjunction is when the sun is between the planet and the Earth. All planets show superior junction at some time, but only Mercury and Venus show inferior conjuntion. Janus The Turtle moves!

Superior conjunction is when planets line up their right-ascention with the sun where the planets are on the opposite side of the sun from the earth (declination is not important for conjunctions), but Inferior conjuntions occur when planets are between the earth and the sun. Only two planetary bodies have orbits which take them between earth and sun.Beagle, Irish, Sailor beware! Look down, look down, along that line before you travel there... -Dr. Burroughs

Is it because of the intense heat and light? "Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That's relativity." Albert Einstein

I'm guessing highly inclined to the ecliptic so it passes near the solar poles. BTW, good idea Nicool.

Just ponder it for a while, the answer will come. Its the kind of thing that is not going to be in any textbook, which is good.

Is it parralel to the eliptic, at the solar equator? Just seems like that's where the difference between the rotational speeds of the core and surface would be greatest, causing the greatest disturbance of magnetic lines (and making sunspots).

Lurch is making a lot of sense. He got to it before I did. Is he right? I think he is.

YES. The bands are formed by differential rotation of the sun (quite like jupiter) (faster at equator, slower at poles) and the sun rotates in the general direction as the revolution of planets. So the next time you see an x-ray photo of the sun and the bands are pointing in odd directions you can tell roughly where the equator of the sun runs in the photograph. I'd love to see some x-ray photos of the sun from above the evliptic plane. Your turn, Lurch. Beagle, Irish, Sailor beware!
