If you have a static IP address and an always on connection, is there anything stopping you from hosting your own web-page?

Some Internet Service Providers will allow it, most won't. Find one that does, setup a web server and your all set.

holy response-time batman!@

thanks Greg. I was thinkin maybe if I could give some friends my I.P address there would be a way for them to actually get in touch with my computer directly.
About ISPs.. how would they know if people were accessing your computer to view your web-page?

Well most ISPs block port 80 which is the default for the web. So you'd have to host on a different port and specify it in your url.

ex.

124.434.3.4:8080

I just want to point out that doing this will not be really secure to your computer, you will need to instal lot of programs onto your computer to make it secure.
And add to this that your friends will not be able to browse your whole hard disk (if you want the hosting thing to be secure).
Now if you want to simply share files (easily), try to host them on a free host (some of those host don't force ADs), i recommend to use www.brinkster.com (free, 30 MBs hosting, 500 MB bandwidth/mo, no force AD).
If you want to share your whole hard disk in a secure way, you can use the IRC file server feature, and program a little script in mIRC, this will make your friends access your whole hard disk or certain parts that you select , both fastly and securely (password secured).

Well, theres another cool trick for ya too. Depending on your version of windows, you can use netbeui to let your friends share files from your pc fairly simple.

For one, your friends need to know your ip.

In a web browser type \\IpA.ddr.ess.here\SharedFolder

Say you wanted to let your friend get some of your video clips in c:\myvideoclips

So open up windows explorer, or my computer, whichever you prefer. Right click on the folder you want to share and choose "Sharing" from the menu**.

Read the various options, lemme know if you need some help with any of them.

Also, your friends can send you Popup messages if they know your IP. all they have to do is go to a dos prompt, type "Net send Ip.Add.re.ss Hey, whats up.

Porn ppl been using that method for advertisement for a while now.

Keep in mind if you enable your friends to transfer files to your shared folder, it will allow anyone with your ip to connect to that folder.

I just keep a couple certain folders shared and always scan anything in them before messing with it.

As far as webhosting goes, maybe you should try a few programs from www.tucows.com

You could probably even use a geocities type site to host the front end of your page, then setup an ftp server off your computer which is a bit easier to secure, and simply link to files from the geocities site to your ftp.

ISPs dont like when you suck up alot of there bandwidth, but if its mostly for personal and a few friends, you shouldn't have any trouble.

I'm sure a quick search about "Using Netbeui" on yahoo or something will give you better instructions than I can now.

** Depending on your version of windows, you might have to go to Properties after right clicking and choose a tab called sharing. I'm not really sure right now.

Netbeui is basically a protocol designed for LANs, but it can be piped through the net as well.

you can enable sharing frome
mycomputer ===> controlpanel ====> network
you must have TCP/IP and DIAL UP ASABTER (at least installed or if you have an ethernet card it will solve the problem...)
enable file and foolder sharing then you can share any thing...

You cannot receive the popup message unless you are on a windows built on NT technology (ie : NT 4.0 or 2000 (pro, server, advanced server) or XP or .NET server) and the messenger service (one of the services of windows) must be running.
So if you want to stop people from sending the popup messages you can simply disable the messenger service.
To do that, click START, select RUN, and type NET STOP MESSENGER
to enable the messenger service again, click START, select RUN, and type NET START MESSENGER
This way you can stop the spammers from reaching you

Did you know there were actually programs out there people were selling to disable Popup messages? If you install the protocol on older machines, you can use it also. not NT machines use netmeeting for similar goals.

I dont see why what I said would be disallowed, merely stating it has been used for advertisement purposes. I love when my mom decides to use my pc and finds a message saying "Hi, I'm sara and I just turn 18. Dont you want to see my first live nude show? Go to this.website.com." Lots of fun explaining that one.

I know, it was a scam basically. I'm pretty sure you can still buy it at staples and such.

There is? I thought win98 just had WinPOPUP.

I believe www.analogx.com have a nifty little web server program (freeware).

If this is to transfer files, then you could set up an FTP server. A lot of ISP's don't like people having public FTPs but since you're keeping it between you and your friends, it should be ok.

Windows 2000 has it, XP might have it, I'm sure it's turned off by default.

It works on win XP.
What is weird is that i find it works on lot of PCs whose owners never enabled it, so it seems it is enabled by default ..

I'm not sure, don't have 6.22 handy. Trying typing:

INTERLNK -?
and
INTERSRV -?

To provide you an explanation of each.

My guess would be the intersrv command has something to do with file serving. The interlnk is probably a pre netbios way of networking. Not sure though.

next time i get my hands on 6.2 I'll try and figure it out.

by the way, in your signature, do you mean dumb, as in stupid or ignorant, instead of dump?

Intersrv is the program that the host computer uses, it allows another computer to access the host computer harddrives.
Interlnk is the program that the client computer uses, it allows it to connect to the computer running intersrv and access the hosts harddrives.

Good luck getting it working. I don't think I ever have reliably.

I believe you must have a crossover cable between the 2 computer's serial (com) or lpt (printer) ports. (Read: slow.)
