My next door neighbour asked me a question this morning that I couldn't answer.

1, He wishes to know if it is possible to change the colour of file folders in windows.

2, I the answer to 1 is yes then, is it possible to have folders different colours depending on what's in them?

For question 2 maybe he will have to manually change the colours to suit his needs?

What version of Windows is it?
There may be a utility that does what you want, I don't know. Here are some tips and tricks that you might enjoy checking out;

There are no built-in feature in all versions of windows (as far as i know) to change the color of a particlular folder.

Maybe your neighbour is confusing with Linux, cause in Linux (which is another Operating System that open-source (and normally found for free from the internet)), you can change the color of a folder to your need.

You may find some software out there that changed the color of the folder, i think i saw one once, but i didn't like it (it was full of bugs, make on VB)

Thanks for the reply guys. It is an interesting question as I said, and I can see the practical applications of the idea. However I can also see that it wouldn't be a common request and thus there is no reeason to expect windows to have a feature for it.

I guess I can look into how to program it and give him a copy of the program.

Blah, I used to have a program that did just that for 95. Can't remember what it was its been so long though. Should be able to track something down through www.tucows.com maybe or maybe from the makers of WindowBlinds.

Not sure if Window Blinds allows you to alter folder color or not. Carefull if you do mess with that program, I've heard you can screw up a machine with it, not sure how though.

I found some information that may let you do enough manipulating to provide a measure of satisfaction;

-----------
Festoon Your Folders, Part I
Use a picture for any folder's background. Open the folder you'd like to redecorate and choose View/Customize This Folder. Click on "Choose a background picture" and then on Next. Select a background picture from the list or click on Browse to find another picture; then click on Open. When you're done, click on Next and then on Finish.

Festoon Your Folders, Part II
You can also change a folder's text color and label background. Open the folder and select View/Customize This Folder. Select "Choose a background picture" and click on Next. Under Icon Caption Colors, click on the black Text box and pick a new color. Click on the check box next to Background and then click on the white box to its right. Pick a color for the background for icon text labels. Click on Next and on Finish.

Hey thanks guys, I'll check all this out. Sorry for the delay in reply, I upgraded my OS from millenium to XP, and had a few hiccups. Then the harddrive went down. Back now though, anfd from the little I've seen of XP it is a million times more stable than ME which is what i had previously!
