I heard some people talking about second-hand smoke, and one of them said that it was worse for you than actually smoking. Is there any truth to this? If so, why?

Here is a fairly informative site: http://www.straubhealth.com/healthtopics/secondhandsmoke.htm

And yet, is it true, that it's worse for a person than actually smoking. That doesn't make any sense to me, but if someone could explain it, I'd appreciate it.

The person actually smoking is absorbing the chemicals in a more concentrated fashion. He/she has the cigarrette in his mouth, and is breathing in more chemicals. While a person standing by would only breath in a small portion of the chemical.www.dbzsc.com/vegeta34.jpg

Hm, well...The second hand smoke, is that coming directly from the cigarette? Or when the smoker exhales? I would assume the latter. In that case, the smoke is being 1)filtered through the cigarette and into the smokers lungs, and then filtered in the lungs and back out into the air where it is breathed in as second-hand smoke. ============= This space intentionally left blank. K, well in that case it would depend on the strength of the filter in the cigarette(is there even one in there??) Thats why the smoker could be getting less toxins, even though they are inhaling more smoke: It has been partially cleaned... . ============= This space intentionally left blank. Errrr... This is sort of BS. Yes the smoke from the tip of a cig has more chemicals but:1. The smoker inhales this as well 2. Most exess smoke is exhaled from the smoker 3. The amount of smoke someone takes in is minor ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ "Because I am a bastard" - Hemingway "It is not that everything is wrong it is that everything is dangerous" - Foucault

everything that is said above. But just want to clarrify that the idea of second hand smoke being worse than smoking, is just that the smoker has the filter, while the non-smoker doesn't get the filtered smoke. But really, I don't think this could be classified as 'worse'.

Thats in conflict with what rage is saying : "Most exess smoke is exhaled from the smoker" ============= This space intentionally left blank. Dave "dav2008" Groysman

And, also, the smoke doesn't go in a straight stream toward the non-smoker; but rather disperses into the air, leaving only a minute fraction that is actually inhaled by the non-smoker. I'm with Rage on this - it seems like BS.

As with all poisons, concentration is key. The smoker inhales a far higher concentration of these toxins than a non-smoker could. I also agree that its bs.

A lot of BS.The amount of time I spend around smokers is very small anyway.
