Jonas Salk, who invented the polio vaccine back in the 40s and 50s, was working on an AIDS vaccine for some time before he died.Talk about thinking out of the box! His vaccine is a decoy that mimics the AIDS virus and adheres to the TCells in the blood of an AIDS patient. When the actual AIDS virus comes along to disrupt a TCell, its favorite host, it finds that the TCell is all booked up with the decoy vaccine and has no place to begin VRNA reproduction. This vaccine is now in laboratory and partial clinical trials today, a work continued by contemporaries of J. Salk's. There's more to this story but I wanted to see if anyone out here has anything more to add to it before I continue. Thank you. carl

Clever. A vacine to be sure, but not a vacine as vacines usually work.... Of course, a normal vacine wouldn't work in the case of aids. since aids targets the very system which vacines usually work to improve.Prove me wrong, I might learn something.

But if your body produces more T-cells, won't you need constant boosters of the vaccine?Njorl "Deceive everyone under 30!" -- um, Me

I'm not sure if this is the same vaccine that VaxGen has been working on but they released the results of their trials yesterday. Not a good result.http://www.cnn.com/2003/HEALTH/conditions/02/24/aids.vaccine/index.html ________________ Beware the man of one book - St Thomas Aquinas

If these things cluster around your T-cells, don't they render them useless, just like HIV does? Why do they call it a FIXED income, when I'm always BROKE ?!

I don't think it is the same but it may be an adaptation. The results were a 78 percent favourable response in Afroamericans and a 63 percent good response among Asian people. The clinical study had a small number of participants and so the results are suspect. Lurch when HIV attaches to the Tcell it is doing so to utilize the cell as a factory for its own offspring. The decoy just looks like its doing that. I think that after some time the virus, having no place to rest and reproduce. would start to go dormant and get washed out of the system, with proper hydration etc... I don't have a link to any information about the SALK vaccine right now but VaxGen has a site. carl
