well it can relieve headaches because it constricts blood vessels.

In medical terms I beleive its called trimethylxanthine. And it IS a DRUG (technically). It stimulates the CNS, thus increasing heart rate and as Greg mentioned constricts blood vessels, raising your blood pressure as well. It is also a diuretic (increases urine production). I've heard that it stimulates the same nurological centers and areas that amphetamines (cocaine, heroin) stimulate but on a much smaller scale. is some instances it can genertae the same addictive effects and you know how some people can be when they don't get their coffee ...

Better start asking: What is it.. It is a natural substance, from a plant.. must be a toxin. Ofcourse the dose makes the toxin.. But rats start eating their toes after a caffeïn shot. Any nailbiters in here?

I believe it comes from various plants, (its a organic compound) such as coffe beans, cocoa leaves, and tea leaves. Its an alkaloid C8H10N4O2...I think thats the chemical formula. Similar types of compounds are found in different ratios among tea leaves and coffe beans, and they basically have the same efects but differ slightly in chemical structure...

I agree with the properties given by Nebula. I've heard the same things about caffeine's actions. A doctor told me once that about 10% of people react the opposite to caffeine than everyone else. Also, large doses can cause some people to fall asleep instead of staying awake.

I remember reading somewhere of a study that OD ing on caffeine actually protected people from the effects of nuclear radiation... I don't know how true it was.

Of course, we need to keep that a secret... If knowledge of that fact gets too popular the coffee growers may start trying to acquire nuclear weapons.

Few questions:

1. Why doesn't caffine affect young people as much??

2. Are there any dangerous side effects when given to small children??

3. Are people getting too dependent on caffine?

4. Have there been any studies done with placebo's?

I was drinking a lot of coffee the past two weeks (trying to wake up in the morning) and last saturday (didn't have any coffee) I got a terrible headache and sunday (no coffee) a terrible headache too. So I've decided to stop drinking coffee (at least not as much) and start drinking green tea and the headache disappeared.

of all the chemical addictions, caffeine probably is the "safest"....

I find that caffene does nothing to me. There is no addiction and it does not speed up my already high metabolism. It does, however, rise my perception of body temperature. I can stand outside in 40 degree weather in jeans and a tee shirt and be warm. The so called energy drinks( Amp, Red Bull, Rush...) don't do anything for me either.

Caffeine is actually pretty darn bad for you. The worst is when you wake up in the morning and go strait for that cup of coffee. Coffee has TONS of caffeine in it, and your body hasn't has caffeine in a while since you have been asleep, so that huge dose of caffeine is extremely bad for you. Check into it if you don't believe me. Don't let that stop you from drinking it however. You only live once, right? Can't have fun if your always worrying about everything.
