Is there any place where it is appropriate to test formatting skills. I am accustomed to using HTML in posting, which (much to my chagrin) does not work at all here. It seems likley that the "Forum Code" is converted to HTML before display (or browsers would have a tough time interpreting the codes) . . . is there any way to go directly to HTML? Failing that, where can I test how the "Forum Code" works? It is disconcerting, for example, that the "quote" code (which appears similar to HTML "BLOCKQUOTE") automatically reduces the size of the font to near-indecipherability on my system. I suppose I can whip up some code to convert the ouput of my HTML coder to "Forum Code", but if there is any way to avoid that I would like to do so.Thanks

When posting, there is a preview button which lets you check out how the post will display.------------- "....this will be one battle we will regret. Mark my words..." FZ 11/14/2002

I think he is asking how he can put his own html code in here, instead of using the forum code.....I think theres an option to turn on HTML, but only Greg has the key to that..mahwhaw ============= This space intentionally left blank. Dave "dav2008" Groysman

There needs to be some restrictions on formatting in a place like PF. Some small set of tools so that the posts look similar and can be easily read by many different people. If I let HTML on, people might abuse it and run tables and lots of crazy things, maybe even some inline javascript. Is there a tool that is not offered in Forum Code that you'd like to see thumper?admin@physicsforums.com http://www.physicspost.com

Well, if I hadn't mislaid the source code to my HTML coder, this wouldn't be a problem . . . I think the forum code works just fine, and I understand the need to control overuse (misuse??) of HTML and Java. The forum code also has a lot more flexibility than most similar schemes. I think maybe I just haven't figured out how to use the forum code efficiently yet. For example, if I want somethig to be bold, I'm used to just selecting the block of text I want to be bold and clicking on the "BOLD" control. If I do that on the message composition screen here, the code pair for bold/endbold simply appears at the bottom of the composition screen. Do I really have to decide what is to be bolded before I type it, or have I missed something? It's not a real problem, just something that is different from most fora at which I have participated. Thanks for a great site, BTW . . . it's nice to see the "fringe science" compartmentalized the way you have done here. At other fora I have frequented the real science discussions were often shoved into the background by young earth creationists, Einstein-was-wrong-and-I-can-prove-it devotees, and folks who want to convince me that we never landed on the moon.

Most the Forum Code is simply like HTML code, except that you use sqaure bracets [] instead of triangle bracets <>.The buttons (Bold, Italic, Underlined, Highlight ... etc) in the post page are not used like normal programs, you do no write the text and select it then press the button, you press the button first, and then put the text between the two forum-code-tags (well they are two normally ). With time you will memorize the forum tags, and you will no more need to press them from the posting format bar (especially if you are used to writting HTML in ASCII editors). Allowing HTML in the forums may be really unsecure, a begginer in ASP will be able to find the passwords of all users if the HTML code is allowed. You've gotta be japaneese !

One thing that I know i've done in other forums but can't get it to work here is to link to a word in your message. So you can write click "here" and the "here" would be the link to the page. However I can only figure out how to link to an adress in http://www.... format. Am i missing something or can you not do that here?"Clothes make the man. You can link a page using a word, if you visit the FAQ page of the site you will see how. But here is a simple example that links back to the Physics Forums Here is how to do it, remember to replace () with [] (URL="http://www.physicsforums.com")Physics Forums(/URL)
